From Olivia: Information and Links

1. We're watching 50 minutes of the film North Country on Wednesday. It fits our theme, "Individuals vs. Systems," in lots of different ways. Here are some links for more information:

The Wikipedia entry

Some information about sexual harassment

Think about how the film connects to other texts we've examined. Think, also, about how the writers of the film are using some of the same tricks/techinques as did Bob Dylan when he wrote "The Lonesome Ballad of Hattie Carroll" (the song we listened to).

2. For Friday, you need to do: write an RR (6) on the film AND examine these two visual texts:

a) Faces of the Dead
b) Miss America

"Faces of the Dead" was haunting...all those dead soldiers made up the face of whatever soldier you clicked on. Some of them were so young. It makes you think, What is a life? I really like the "Miss America" picture..I think it shows how even though America is seen as this beautiful, bold country, it has secrets under all the beauty...there have been just as many people slain by the military as American soldiers killed during war. Both pieces contrast each other, though, so they're very interesting to see side by side.

I REALLY LIKE "FACES OF THE DEATH", BECAUSE IT GAVE IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT HOW MANY TROOPS HAVE DIED FROM THE MOST RECENT DEATH. IF YOU LOOK AT IT CLOSELY YOU CAN NOTICE HOW CLOSE EACH DEATH IS. FOR INSTANCE HOW ANY DEATH HAPPENED IN THE SAME DAY AND HOW ALSMOST EVERY OTHER DAY ANOTHER TROOPS DIES. YOU CAN ALSO SEE THAT THE BRANCH WITH MOST DEATH IS THE ARMY, WHY IS THAT? OR HOW THE REASON FOR THEIR DEATHs MOST ARE UNKNOWN, WHY IS A THAT? IN "MISS AMERICA" I REALLY LIKE IT TOO BECAUSE SOCIETY PICTURES AMERICA THIS COUNTRY SO BEAUTIFUL WHEN IN REALITY MANY DARK SECRETS ARe HIDDEN.

"faces of the dead" really is an eye opening textabout life its self. Its scary to think how many soldiers have died in the shadow of the dead. And when it comes to the pictures it somewhat symbolizes America because even though from far the picture lokks beautiful and strong you look up close and there are many flaws to it. Just like America.

"Faces of the Dead" was an incredible text. Pictures can say more than words. Looking at all those dead soldiers gave me chills, but then I felt sad to imagine some were my age and had a life ahead and did not deserve to die the way they did. Then you think about it and may be this is the way they wanted to be remembered as, heros, which they certainly are, dead or alive.

I thought "Faces of the Dead" was very creative. It really hit me how many people have died serving in Iraq and I do not think many people know that. In the "Miss America" picture, I thought about how people may see America as a "perfect" country, but it is really not. I think we try to hide all the negative things and only show the positive things to make us seem like we are "better" than everyone else.

"Faces of the Dead" linked the war news and statistics to the reality and the real lives of those who were lost in the war. On the other hand, "Miss Independent" shows how human cultures is not glorified with beauty.

"Faces Of the dead" was very surpirising to me because i do define them as one body, but they are thier own individual person. No one really talks about the war in Iraq unless, but if there son, brother, boyfriend, or cousins were in the war it would be a big deal to us. I think we do not take much time to really see how great we have it.

"faces of death" has a strong impact toward everyone whose had a family member serving the army. You never know what could happen next.Even though people arent forced to join the army, they each have their own purpose to serve. It gives them individuality to fight for their own purposes, but they all have the same mission in mind, and thats to fight for the country they would sacrafice a soul for.

"Faces of the Dead" was a very unique and different way that makes a person realize what's going on in the world. No one really talks about the war and people that are in the war. people don't think too much about it. We need to start noticing our surrendings and what's going on around the world.
