For Friday . . .

Two image-texts:
1) Vostell's "Miss America"
2) The New York Times' "Faces of the Dead"

Focus, especially, on "Faces of the Dead."

I see this image as a text because it's trying to tell a story. There is alot going on and I'm assuming the young girl is "Miss America". To me, i see a lot of chaos in her life or in the world. I see violence and killing. I think this image represents satire. Miss America is suppose to represent "pretty and perfection" and the images that surround her are anything but that. There's blood on her face and just alot of comotion going on.
In Faces of the Dead, I think it's really strange how they can make one big image of each person's face of everyone who died in the war. As I clicked on some of the photos, I noticed how many of these young men were so close to my age. It's surprising to me how so many of them died so young. Also, when I see this image I can easily connect it to individual and system. The people who died are the individual and the war is the system.

When I look at the image of "Miss America" I see that there is alot of violence around her, A man that has a gun held up to his head and blood splattered on her face. there is alot of suffering and fear in the picture.
In Faces of the Dead i was suprised with the death rates for young adults ranging from 18 to 24 it was at 49 %, I was suprised how young the soldiers that died were. If I had to connect this to individuals v.s. systems the soldiers would be the individuals and the war would be the system.

Faces of the dead is sad because it shows that so many young men, between 18-24, have died. Most have been in the army and had vehicle explosions. I can see the relation between "miss america"; which shows a lady with blood and a man with a gun. It follows our theme of individuals vs systems. The people that passed in all of these articles are related not only had did they all have a family and a dream they also were caught in the individual vs system battle.

The representation I see from the Miss America image is that the woman represents the beauty that she has is what our world is suppose to be. However the man being held by the gun and the picture of a man dead as well represents the suffering and horror some individuals go through everyday. The girl that should be Miss America could also represent someone who can save these types of tragedy but there is little she can do about it which the red marks on her body could represent.
In the Faces of the Dead, It's really sad how so many people had died from mostly accidents with the vehicles. There's barely any that were killed by gun shot wound or anything of that type of nature. They were all so young and probably had families that miss them. I also find it really interesting on how they set up the way you can view all the people who had died. Based on what I've seen from the two posted the individuals would be the civilians and soldiers that suffer everyday in the system of wars and tragedy.

I sort of see this image as sort of our dark side contrary to the America most people think about. this image really reminded me of watchmen the movie where you see superheroes who are supposed to embody peace and justice and all that stuff but when you watch the movie it sort of twist the heroes in to villains. I think that's why miss America is covered in blood and violent images, and one question actually, who is the man with the gun to his head, I know I've seen him somewhere but I don't know from where? For the second "faces of the dead," I didn't really know what to say except this war reminds me so much of the Vietnam War, I think so many soldiers have died bravely but what are we achieving now by staying there in the Middle East. There will always be people with radical views; there will always be terrorist in the world, and we won’t always be safe no matter how many die or are brought to justice. we have to protect our soil now not cause trouble over in another place in the world. we have to remember we are all human and we are all responsible for one another we have to learn to have peace not just hope for it. this war is a kind of system the people, the soldiers are all the individuals. as for the actual images well there was something weird, they where all kids, I didn't see anyone past the age of 30. it's really stupid when you aren't old enough to drink and yet you can join the army and be trained to kill your fellow man.

I must disagree with a lot of the post because I don't really see "Miss America" but as another version from the artist of what would be a "Miss REAL America". The United States has a background of corruption and illusory to not only its enemies but also its own people. I feel that the woman is supposed to depict the perverted underscore of the United States and that her nudity that is covered up is in a way like the way the U.S shows some of its sleaze but covers a lot to make itself look good. The picture of the man and the massacre below is what surfaced or bled through the picture of “Miss America” and no matter how much they try to cover up and beautify, it will bleed through. In “faces of the dead” it really gave me chills because it goes to show that they all died in a different day, in a different age rate, race, and so many distinctions but in all they died connected by war. The way the photographs make up one another is metaphor for the old saying “an army of one”. It really shows how together they all make an impact on the world.

In "Miss America", instead of world peace and and beauty, i see disaster, violence, and a lot of blood. In Faces of the Dead, i was amazed to see how many soldiers have died, and so close to my age. It's incredible to see all these dead men, come together to form on face in particular. It's very sad to see so many soldiers dead, because of a war of no importance of my opinion.

I kinda do agree with some of you. I believe "Miss America" is intended to show what the artist believes to be the true depiction of the modern day America. Not in the sense that this is our daily lives, but it the sense that other countries globally envision America in such way. When other countries hear of America coming or as history tells us the times America has gone to other countries, a great deal of violence has broken out. So, when "Miss America" arrives in a new country, she is seen as a source of violence and rage.

As for "Faces of the Dead" It was insane to go through different pictures and see that age these soldiers tends to be pretty young. I was also interested to see if I could find someone from my hometown, and I did! Chicago it self had a couple of deaths. As I looked at these images, I never realized how many soldiers have died and the millions of people worldwide this Iraq mission has affected.

The reason i see this image as a text is because it immediatly grabs your attention and your analyzing each picture and each picture shocks you as you read the statistics of the soldiers and makes you think about their lives and how they no longer exist and how these people had family and loved ones at home that they will never see again. Miss America was a picture filled with guns blood and violence. It signifies to me that the united states covers up all of that and hides it and focuses on showing things that people can sway away from the idea that the US is so violent.
